The Rich Text Format (RTF) is a tried-and-tested file format for formatted text documents. It was developed in the 1980s and had a clear objective from the outset: to make texts with formatting such as bold, italics or paragraph settings interchangeable between different programmes and operating systems. This is exactly what it continues to do reliably to this day, as virtually every word processing programme can open RTF files.
In practice, however, RTF files have their limitations. More complex layouts, embedded graphics or advanced formatting can be rendered much more effectively in Microsoft Word’s DOC format. Further processing in Office environments is also generally less complicated with DOC files, as Word is firmly established as the standard in many companies and public sector organisations.
